041810 fever dreams

041810

when you and i first met we were all smiles
we danced in the sun and walked for long miles
beneath the moonlit night sky
we thought no such thing of goodbye
like fools on trial where the rules don’t apply

friends turned foes whispered rumors about us
love turned suspicion, doubt grew into mistrust
cold anxiety and fear gave us wrong advice
hearts filled with lust, carve and serve by the slice
our short loneliness grew long as we paid the price

last sunday i woke from my sleep without hope
fever dreams, nightmares sent me spiraling
i crashed and i broke from the shock all alone
harsh air made me choke as i fled from your throne
through landscapes laden with guilty white bones
my feet sent me wandering, thinking of home

i was waiting for you on the tracks and you came,
smokestack of trouble chained to your back
it drowned out the sunshine,
we said goodbye to the day
and now we’re running away

lives left behind on the make
too little give, too much take
and in our wake how they’ve grown
these same old seeds that we’ve sewn

052112 slashed wrists

052112

hitting bottom with balled fists
slashed wrists slash tires
start fires, burn the liars
inside their own fraternities
or wherever they feel safe

carve and draw the carnal buyers
who traffick for Eternity
quarter them for the corner market
before they can escape

unaccountable infallibility
broadcast channel hate
auto-immune impunity
drown in water drinking wine
better living through passive gravity
enjoy the path of least resistance down
easy, take your time
it’s impossible to be too late
any way you draw the line
this is our collective fate:

our self, our righteous
arbitrary and divine
loos’d of limits, untamed on one side
opposite the sea of sociopathy
narcissistic rising tide
semantically redundant:
insanity and the civilized

find your mode of redemption
these thoughts mark mine:
live wild and free, fight captivity
fight domestication, tyranny, control and greed;
inspire and lead
be sensitive, courageous, ethical, wise
resilient, persistent, live however you can
just live your life to its fullest
so you can die…

Open Letter of Resignation

September 21, 2009

PLEASE NOTE:  Many readers have stumbled across this post while searching for example letters of resignation.  I am not suggesting the below resignation as a template or model if you are considering resigning from your workplace for similar issues.  Please be aware that there are repercussions for resigning publicly, and for calling people on their crap if they have more institutional power than you do.  One of the ways you can protect yourself from retaliation is to give your boss a letter of resignation that does not implicate or accuse them or wrong-doing.  Unlike the below.

Below is the letter of resignation I just sent.  I was doing anti-violence work under an executive director who has her entire staff terrified and purges the organization of all employees who show anything other than submissive assent to her.  Why does she bully her employees?  According to some recent peer-reviewed research in social psychology, it’s because she feels both incompetent AND empowered.  Scary combination, and completely unacceptable and inappropriate anywhere — let alone within the context of anti-violence and social justice work!

UPDATE (9/21):  The SATF Executive Director’s response is included, below.

UPDATE (9/24):  Another follow up from the Executive Director, which includes a message that Eva Kutas, Board President, sent to the SATF staff (but not the listservs).

UPDATE (10/7):  A follow up that came through RAINN, entitled “Just What Are We Afraid Of?”
